Confused about which breast implant is right for you? Have no fear. By breaking down the implant process into its smaller components, sometimes known as the four S’s of breast augmentation, you can take the stress out of decision making. Vitenas Cosmetic Surgery will walk you through these choices, and once each of these points is addressed, you will be ready to enjoy a beautiful, proportionate chest.
The Four S of Breast Augmentation:
S #1 – Silicone versus Saline
Gone are the days that silicone implants were considered risky or dangerous. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found silicone implants to be completely safe. In fact, they actually have less chance for leakage than their saline counterparts. The decision for saline or silicone should be based on your desired look. Silicone implants are the most popular choice, making up more than 85% of the breast augmentations in 2015. While a little more expensive than saline, silicone looks and feels the most natural. Saline implants will give the breasts a firmer, rounder, perkier look. They require a slightly smaller incision and are less expensive than silicone.
S #2 – Surgical Incision
It is so easy to get so caught up in the shape and curvature of new boobs that women forget they have a say-so in the size and location of breast augmentation scars. The right choice will depend on a variety of factors, including the surgeon’s technique and the type of implant used. Saline implants, which are filled with a saline solution after they are place into the breast pocket, result in smaller scars than saline. The three main approaches to incisions include inframammary (under the breast crease), per-areolar (around the nipple/areola), and transaxillary (under the arm). Advanced surgical techniques mean that scars are smaller than in years past, and are better concealed in the natural anatomy.
S #3 – Size
There are a variety of implant volumes available to ensure you get the best size for your desired aesthetic result. Begin size ‘hunting’ with photographs of women (with a similar body type), that have breasts that you admire. The final look is what is important, not cup size (which depends solely on the bra manufacture). At the consultation appointment, you will try on implant sizers, allowing you to see which volume and shape looks best on you. Get the most out of this experience by wearing a non-padded bra and sheer t-shirt, but also bring along some of your favorite shirts or swimwear.
S #4 – Selection
A successful breast augmentation will depend on the skill of your surgeon. Only choose a board certified plastic surgeon with years of experience. Once you have narrowed your search, go through their online before/after photographs, getting an idea of the number of successful breast augmentations they have performed, as well as their personal style. Online reviews and testimonials can also provide firsthand information from a surgeon’s recent patients. Finally, with all of this information at hand, schedule an in-person consultation. Remember, ultimately to pick a doctor that you feel comfortable with. If your gut has any doubts, move on to the next consultation appointment.
