No matter how old you are, you probably sing along with One Direction once in a while. Oh that adorable Harry Styles! However, did you know the teen idol was born with more than just a cute face and a smooth voice? Harry was born with four nipples.
While extra nipples are not uncommon, they are rarely discussed, and are often a source of embarrassment. Swimming, undressing in front of others, and even intimidate situations may be avoided, just to keep the condition private. Luckily, Harry proudly showing off his third and fourth nipples opens up a much-needed discussion of accessory breast tissue. Other celebrities have joined in, as well; Mark Wahlberg, Tilda Swinton, and Lily Allen have confessed that they, too, have a supernumerary nipple.
The Supernumerary Nipple:
The condition of a supernumerary or extra nipple is referred to as polymastia. Surprisingly common, polymastia is seen in one in 18 males, and one in 50 women. Since these nipples can range in their level of completeness, in many cases they are taken for moles and go undetected. These additional nipples may look like a small patch of hair or a red bump. On the other end of the spectrum, polymastia may present as a miniature breast/nipple – that is even capable to lactate or produce milk.
Supernumerary nipples normally appear along what are called the milk lines, running from the armpit, through the normal nipples, and then ending at the groin. This thin strip of tissue, connected to the mammary gland and present before birth, is present in all mammals. Think about the teats of a cow or nipples on a nursing cat. While less common, there can be the presence of an extra nipple anywhere on the body; some have been in other areas such as the feet, back and the face.
Options for Correction:
First of all, take a moment to remember that your body is beautiful. Then, if you are still interested in the correction of a congenital breast anomaly, talk with a trusted cosmetic surgeon. There are several options for the successful removal of accessory tissue, depending on your specific situation, including excision or a lipectomy.
