Breast Augmentation has come a long way since its earliest days. Even over the last several years, the procedure has become safer, more efficient, and provides better results than ever before.
One of the ways in which cutting-edge technology has changed Breast Augmentation is in the area of pain control. At one time, the discomfort after a Breast Augmentation would take weeks to subside, as the implants slowly sank into their desired position. Women would need to take extensive time off from work to recover.
Today, there is little pain after a Breast Augmentation procedure. The first 24 hours after surgery will require prescription pain killers. After that point, however, many women are able to control discomfort using over the counter pain medication such as Tylenol. In general, ladies can normally resume work and other low-impact activities in three to five days.
Here is a quick guide to the discomfort from Breast Augmentation:
The first day:
Patients can expect the first 24 hours after surgery to be the most difficult. Women will be in moderate pain. Dr. Vitenas will prescribe the appropriate pain medications to keep you resting comfortably at home during this period. During this first day, you will be groggy from the anesthesia, as well, so having assistance at home is essential.
Day 2-7:
Over the first week, patients can expect their chest to be tight and feel ‘full’, although the pain will dramatically decrease. Most women are able to use nonprescription pain medications at this point, to control the discomfort. It is not uncommon for patients to feel fatigued for several days, so rest during this time is essential for healing.
The following few weeks:
Women are normally feeling goo enough to return to work three to five days after their Breast Augmentation. For the next four to six weeks, however, strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided. The breasts will potentially remain swollen and sensitive for the first month or more. Some women will note numbness in the breast; this is normal and the feeling will return as healing progresses.
