Most girls grow up dreaming of our future bra size, one day being a C cup or D cup. Later on in life, bra shopping only continues to reinforce the way we think of our breast size. So why, after years of cup-size mumbo jumbo, when it comes time to shop for breast implants, cup size is thrown out the window?
The average woman has no idea that bra cup sizes are irrelevant. It is a surprise that there is no official, international system of cup size measurement. All along, this labeling has actually been a marketing ploy used by brands to make the customer feel good (or not so good) about her body.
While the concept may be shocking at first, after giving it some thought, most everyone has probably noticed the sizing difference between stores at some point. The reality is that cup sizes are all about a retailer’s subjective labeling. A 36C and a 34D are essentially the same bra. Furthermore, the fluidity in cup sizes means the C cup you have dreamed about getting might not even be a C cup at all. Dr. Vitenas explains, “Bras have become a marketing tool for the entire world. Determining what size breasts you should have has nothing to do with what size bra you wear.”
Breast implants come in volume, not in cup sizes. The quantity of fill, either silicone or saline, is referred to as cc’s, for example a 300cc or 350cc implant. Generally, there is a 10% variance in fill between each size, as this is the change that is most easily discernable to the eye. Breast implant volumes are consistent across brands and types. Additionally, women can trust that getting the same cc implant even a decade down the road will provide the identical volume.
Determining the number of cc’s that will look best on your individual body type, and will create your desired shape, requires an in-person consultation. At this time, implant sizers of different volumes can be tried on under a sheer bra and thin shirt. This process allows you to visualize the specific implant size on your unique body.
