While implants will create a full, round breast, restoring youthful volume, the breast augmentation procedure does nothing to lift the chest. Unfortunately, aging tissues can stretch and lose elasticity after pregnancy and childbirth. The breasts often need a little ‘pick me up’ with a breast lift (mastopexy), along with the addition of implants. Many women worry that this combination of procedures means increased risks, as there is more in-depth surgical intervention. So, what is the verdict? Is the breast augmentation/breast lift combined on a safe choice for women?

To start, remember that any surgical procedure holds a degree of risk, even when performed by the most experienced, trusted surgeon. There is a chance for unexpected bleeding, scarring, hematoma, infection, and long-lasting nerve damage. That being said, combining a breast augmentation with a breast lift does not dramatically increase the risk level. In fact, according to the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructed Surgery (PRS), the combo-procedure is as safe as a single-procedure surgery.
Research by the PRS shows that the risk level is similar for both a breast augmentation and the combination implant/mastopexy. As incisions are already being made in the breast tissue, slightly altering access to the skin and supporting structures will not make the procedure any more dangerous. There is also no increase in the chance for bleeding or infection. A board certified plastic surgeon, with experience in breast augmentation and lift procedures, can ensure the safest possible procedure, tailored to the individual patient’s needs
The PRS study pointed out that two individual procedures mean twice the time off work, double the assistance from a care-giver or helper around the house, and increased costs for the second set of operating fees. So, while the risk level is the same, optimal results can be obtained with the combo-procedure, making a breast augmentation/mastopexy more worth a woman’s time and effort.
The benefits of a combined breast augmentation and breast lift include:
- Less scarring, as one set of incisions can be used for both techniques
- Less removal of skin
- Less expensive than opting for two, separate surgical procedures
- Less recovery time
