One of the most common concerns a woman in her childbearing years will express, when deciding on breast implants, is in regards to breast feeding. “If I choose to have a baby in the future, can I breast feed with implants?” Doctors will tell you the answer is most likely yes. However, some exciting new research shows hard evidence that over 90% of breast augmentation patients will be able to breast feed without any difficulty. This study serves to reinforce what cosmetic surgeons have always known.
In the December issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a recent Argentinian study, conducted by Sandra Filiciani, M.D., was highlighted, showing an exceptionally high chance for successful breastfeeding after a breast implant procedure. Dr. Filiciani states, “We compared the habit of breastfeeding in 100 women with and 100 women without breast implants.” She goes on to say, “Our research discovered that after 1 month, 93% of the women with a breast implant could successfully breastfeed their babies.”
Performed between April 2013 and July 2014, Dr. Filiciani’s research was conducted at the Sanatorio de la Mujer and Centro Quirúrgico in Rosario, Argentina. During this time, Dr. Filiciani and her colleagues selected a random group of 200 women, from the 3,950 births that occurred during this period, completing an important study regarding breast implants and breast feeding. “Many women have asked if a breast implant can affect her ability to breastfeed their babies,” says Dr. Filiciani. “Until now, we did not have the scientific answer.”
As modern breast implants and surgical techniques continue to improve in quality, the need for research on the side-effects will need to continue. However, these current findings from Dr. Filicianai and her colleagues are great news for all the women looking into breast augmentation, and who may one day, also choose to breast feed.
