Mastopexy, also known as a breast lift, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to lift the breasts. As we age, our skin begins to lose some of its elasticity. This is particularly true for breast tissue, as women often find as they age their breasts begin to lose their firmness and shape.
Women have breast lift surgery because their breasts are sagging due to:
- Weight gain and loss
- Aging effects of loss of fat and thinning of breast tissue
Dr. Paul Vitenas has performed thousands of breast lifts to lift and restore a woman’s breast to a more youthful appearance. Dr. Vitenas advises that, unlike a breast augmentation procedure, which involves inserting an implant under the breasts; a breast lift lifts and tightens a woman’s breast. A lift will not change the size of your breasts, but it will make them look more youthful.
Dr. Vitenas often combines a breast lift with breast augmentation for additional volume and upper pole fullness (fullness in the upper portion of the breast). By lifting and tightening the breast tissue, most women feel a breast lift helps to restore contour to their body. (See before/after photos of breast lift patients)
If sagging breasts bother you, Dr. Paul Vitenas and the professionals at Vitenas Cosmetic Surgery Center, located in Houston, TX, can help.
Breast Lift Consultation
Dr. Vitenas advises that good candidates for a breast lift are women who have:
• Good health
• A loss of shape of the breast and nipple malposition
• Stabilized weight (no large fluctuations in weight)
• Finished having children
During the consultation for mastopexy, Dr. Vitenas will go over your complete medical history, discuss your goals, explain the details of the procedure including his minimally invasive breast lift technique, show you reasonable and expected outcomes, and explain your recovery process.
Dr. Vitenas will help you decide on the best breast enhancement procedures to help you achieve a more proportioned shape and contour.
Breast Lift Procedure
Dr. Paul Vitenas explains that most breast lifts are done using three small incisions as follows:
• Made around the areola
• Made vertically from the areola on the underside of the breasts
• Made horizontal around the curve of the breasts
This technique allows Dr. Vitenas to expertly remove the excess breast tissue and reposition the breasts so they are positioned higher on the chest. It should be noted that the incisions made during a breast lift procedure will result in a small scar. Specifically, the scar is located around the areola, runs vertically below the nipple, and ends in a horizontal line in the crease beneath the breast.
Dr. Vitenas performs mastopexy procedures at the Day Surgery Center, an outpatient facility at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital in Houston, TX. Breast lift surgery takes two to three hours to complete.
Breast Lift Recovery
The recovery after the breast lift takes about seven to ten days. While pain generally isn’t too severe, medication can be taken to help control any patient discomfort. Swelling and bruising are uncommon, and some numbness may also occur. Patients are often required to wear a soft support bra for several weeks after surgery. Work can usually be resumed within a few days, though more strenuous activities will need to be postponed for four to six weeks.
