Q – What is breast reduction?
Breast reduction is a safe surgical procedure which reduces the size of large breasts and lifts them to a higher position on the chest. The procedure improves the sagging and heaviness associated with large breasts. Dr. Paul Vitenas advises that many women elect to have breast reduction surgery to relieve back and neck pain and obtain a shape that is more proportional to their bodies.
Q – Who is a candidate for breast reduction?
Healthy women with large, sagging, heavy, or pendulous breasts may be good candidates for breast reduction.
Q: What if I lose my excess weight, will that reduce my breast size?
While it is true for some women that weight loss may help to reduce large breasts, it can’t alone take care of the problem for the majority of women who developed large breasts during adolescence. Dr. Vitenas’ extensive plastic surgery experience documents that for these women, surgical removal of the excess tissue (breast reduction) is the recommended procedure to alleviate pain and to create more natural looking breasts.

Q – Where is the surgery for breast reduction performed?
Dr. Vitenas performs the surgery for breast reduction at the Houston Surgery Center, located in the same building as Vitenas Cosmetic Surgery in Houston, TX.
Q – What type of anesthesia is used for breast reduction?
Breast reduction is performed with general anesthesia using a board certified anesthesiologist.
Q – How is breast reduction performed?
Dr. Vitenas uses minimally invasive surgical techniques for the various types of breast surgeries he performs. For breast reduction, a periareola and inverted T incision is made. This is located around the areola and extends in a vertical line below the nipple and horizontally along the crease below the breast. After the incision is made, excess glandular tissue, fatty tissue, and skin are carefully removed, and liposuction may be used in the armpit area for better breast contour.
Q – How long is the surgery for breast reduction?
The surgery for breast reduction is about three hours long. Dr. Vitenas will inform you of the length of time of your surgery.
Q – Does breast reduction leave scars?
Women will have a scar after breast reduction surgery which is located around the areola and extending in a vertical line below the nipple and horizontally in the crease beneath the breast.
Q – Is the breast reduction a painful procedure?
Dr. Vitenas advises his patients that their breasts may ache some after the breast reduction surgery, though medication can help to manage this.
Q – How long is the recovery and what is it like after breast reduction?
Women can expect a recovery time of seven to ten days. Any discomfort patients experience can be managed with medication. A surgical bra may also need to be worn for several days after surgery.
Q – When will I be able to return to work after my breast reduction surgery?
Patients are often able to return to work within a few days after breast reduction surgery.
Q – When will I be able to exercise after my breast reduction procedure?
Patients will need to postpone strenuous activities and exercise for four to six weeks.
Q – What are the risks or possible complications of breast reduction?
The potential risks or complications associated with breast reduction may include bleeding, infection, hematoma, loss of nipple sensation, delayed wound healing, and loss of nipple. Dr. Vitenas will carefully review these risks during your personal consultation.
Q- What results can I expect from breast reduction surgery?
Dr. Vitenas advises that the appearance of the breasts will change over time. The breasts will become slightly smaller as the swelling subsides. They will also descend to a small extent as the effects of gravity take place. Most of Dr. Vitenas patients find their surgical breast reduction to be reflective of “more natural looking” breast and are delighted with their overall body shape and appearance.
Q – Is it possible to finance my breast reduction procedure?
There are financing options available for plastic surgery, and Dr. Vitenas will discuss these with you during your initial breast reduction consultation. Please visit our financing options page to learn more.
